Turn a picture into text with your phone

Your phone camera is a scanner you always carry. Snap a picture of a receipt, a page from a book, a notice on a wall or your handwritten notes, and this photo to text converter turns the picture into text you can copy, search and keep.

How to take a photo that converts well

  • Use good, even light. Daylight near a window is ideal; avoid your own shadow over the page.
  • Hold the phone parallel to the paper, not at a steep angle.
  • Fill the frame with the text and tap to focus before you shoot.
  • Turn off the flash on glossy paper to avoid glare.

Don't worry if the photo is sideways or upside down: the converter detects the orientation and straightens it before reading. It also ignores busy backgrounds such as a wooden table or a patterned cloth under the page.

Printed text, forms and handwriting

Printed documents give the most accurate results. Neat handwriting and forms filled in by hand, such as names, dates and amounts written on a receipt, are read well too. Very messy or joined-up handwriting is hard for any OCR tool, so always check names and numbers before relying on them. Our guide on improving OCR accuracy has more tips.

Hindi and Marathi photos

Photos of Hindi or Marathi documents, including ones that mix English, are supported too. Choose the language in the menu, or use the dedicated Hindi image to text page.

Frequently asked questions

Does it work with photos taken on my phone?

Yes. Hold the phone parallel to the page, avoid shadows and make sure the text is in focus. Sideways or upside-down photos are turned the right way round automatically.

My photo is tilted or upside down. Do I need to fix it first?

No. Slightly tilted, sideways and upside-down photos are detected and straightened automatically before the text is read.

Can it read handwriting?

Yes, neat handwriting and filled-in forms usually convert well. Very messy or joined-up handwriting is harder for any OCR tool, so check the result before you use it.

How can I get the most accurate results?

Use a sharp, well-lit image with the text the right way up and filling most of the frame. Avoid shadows and glare, and choose the correct language. Faded text is handled automatically; for faded Hindi or Marathi text, also tick Enhanced.

Are my images uploaded to a server?

No. Text recognition runs entirely inside your browser, on your own device. Your images and the extracted text are never uploaded to our servers or to anyone else.

Is the image to text converter really free?

Yes. It is free with no sign-up, no watermark and no daily limit. You can convert up to 10 images at a time, as often as you like.
