How to convert a JPG to text

JPG (also written JPEG) is the most common image format in the world. Almost every phone camera, scanner app and website saves pictures as JPG, which makes "JPG to text" one of the most useful conversions you can do: it turns a flat picture of words into text you can edit, search and paste anywhere.

Step by step

  • Click Upload images, or drag your .jpg or .jpeg files onto the box above.
  • Wait a few seconds while the text is recognised. The first conversion also downloads the recognition engine once.
  • Check the text, fix anything you need to, then press Copy or Download .txt.

Getting the best text from a JPG

JPG uses lossy compression, so every time an image is re-saved or forwarded through a messaging app it loses a little detail. Fine print and thin fonts suffer first. If a result looks wrong, try to get the original file rather than a forwarded copy, or a higher-resolution version. Text that fills more of the image is always read more reliably than tiny text in a large photo.

If your JPG is a photo of a document, the converter automatically corrects a sideways or upside-down picture. Faded and low-contrast receipts are handled automatically. If you work mostly with screenshots, the PNG to text and screenshot to text tools explain why lossless images give even cleaner results.

Is JPG to text conversion safe?

Yes. Unlike many online converters, this tool never uploads your JPG. The text is extracted inside your browser, so scanned IDs, bills and personal letters stay on your device.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a difference between JPG and JPEG?

No. JPG and JPEG are the same image format with two spellings of the file extension. Both work exactly the same way in this converter.

My JPG is blurry or compressed. Will it still work?

Usually, yes. Heavily compressed JPGs from messaging apps can lose fine detail, so send the original photo if you can. Avoid images that have been forwarded many times.

Are my images uploaded to a server?

No. Text recognition runs entirely inside your browser, on your own device. Your images and the extracted text are never uploaded to our servers or to anyone else.

Can I convert several images at once?

Yes. Select or drop up to 10 images together. Each one gets its own result, and you can copy or download all the text in one go.

My photo is tilted or upside down. Do I need to fix it first?

No. Slightly tilted, sideways and upside-down photos are detected and straightened automatically before the text is read.

Is the image to text converter really free?

Yes. It is free with no sign-up, no watermark and no daily limit. You can convert up to 10 images at a time, as often as you like.
